Shooting Asian fusion wedding photos has brought me so much joy over the years. One of the things I enjoy most about being a wedding photographer is experiencing different marriage traditions from around the world. It’s such a pleasure to be welcomed into a multi-cultural community and join in with all the celebrations.
Spending 14 years as a wedding photographer has meant I have built up a wealth of experience when it comes to multi-cultural weddings. I enjoy being exposed to traditions different to my own and learning something new. And I pride myself on fitting in wherever I go. No matter who I’m working with, I always approach a wedding with respect and sensitivity. Plus a healthy dose of creative curiosity for capturing whatever chaos is happening!
What is the meaning of ‘fusion wedding’?
A fusion wedding is the celebration of marriage for two people who have different cultural or religious backgrounds.
Fusion weddings can vary in terms of how much (or little) religious or cultural traditions are observed. It may be that a couple want to incorporate subtle nods to their culture in terms of dress code, food or music. Or they may want to totally embrace one persons’ culture and go ahead with a full religious ceremony and traditional celebration. Some couples may go with the option of having one wedding based on one person’s culture, and one day celebrating the other.
When it comes to Asian fusion weddings, one person in the couple may be from a Sikh, Hindu, Muslim (or other faith practice) or Asian cultural background. One person in the couple may follow a different religion, or one (or both) of them may not practice a religion at all. Regardless of their religious beliefs, couples who choose a fusion wedding have a desire to honour their cultural backgrounds on their wedding day.
Asian fusion weddings are often big celebrations over several days with a focus on love and community. Lot of guests are usually invited and significant traditions and rituals take place before, during and after the marriage ceremony itself. One thing is for sure; fusion wedding photos should be as colourful and fun as the day itself!

How to plan an Asian fusion wedding
Like any wedding, the choice is down to you as a couple when it comes to how you want to plan your fusion wedding. There are so many ways to organise your day, from keeping it simple with a small civil ceremony to throwing a huge party over multiple days.

6 things to consider when planning an Asian fusion wedding:
1. Ceremony: Do you want to have a religious ceremony from one of your faith traditions, combine the two in a celebrant-led wedding ceremony, or have a non-religious legal ceremony? You could also consider holding two types of ceremonies on different days.
2. Dress code: Would you like to wear traditional clothing from your own culture, or embrace that of your partner? You could also surprise your guests (or even your partner) with a change of clothing during your reception. Make sure you tell your guests on their invitation about any dress code, so they’re prepared to join in.
3. Decor: You could embrace your cultural backgrounds by decorating your wedding reception room to reflect your different cultures in a fun and colourful way.
4. Food: The perfect excuse to ditch a meat-and-two-veg wedding breakfast and serve up traditional food family style, such as a buffet of delicious curries with all the trimmings.
5. Music and entertainment: Live Dhol drummers and dancers are a sure-fire way to get the party started by enthralling your guests. It’s also highly recommended to hire a DJ with experience of fusion weddings; they will know what songs to play to get all your guests dancing. I’ve also seen Bhangra dancers at an Asian fusion wedding who gave all the guests a lesson before opening the dance floor, it went down great!
6. Rituals and traditions: Aside from the ceremony, are there any cultural traditions you’d like to incorporate into your wedding? This may be a gift exchange between your two families or hiring a Henna artist to decorate your guest’s hands at your pre-wedding party or reception.

Colourful Asian wedding photographs
There’s one thing you can guarantee when it comes to Asian fusion wedding photos; they will be so colourful! I think my colourful wedding photography style lends itself perfectly to capturing multi-cultural weddings. Just think about how rainbow saris will ‘pop’ in your finished images.
Fusion weddings are all about celebrating the love of the couple, the two families from different cultures joining together, honouring your community elders and children having fun playing together. My joyful wedding photography style will capture all the fun of your celebrations, so you can look back on what a great time you had together on your wedding day.

“Cassandra was the photographer for our wedding in July 2024, and what a delight she was. I was initially a bit nervous, as I had so much going on in my head that day that I worried about having somebody in such an intimate space who I didn’t know, but she absolutely took that out of my hands and pretty much just got to work, which meant a lot.
She beautifully blends both professionalism and warmth consistently. She is upbeat, personable and friendly; not to mention more than happy to accommodate weddings of different faiths – she absolutely prioritised the comfort of all guests in attendance, for which we were all so appreciative.
Her ideas for where to have the photos taken produced some of the most beautiful images, which we’ll now have to always treasure.” – Aneesa

Asian fusion wedding videos
As well as photographs of your Asian fusion wedding, you may also want to consider a wedding video to complete your coverage. Having your wedding celebrations captured on video for you to watch again and again will bring back those happy memories by giving a real feel of all the life, joy and colour of your big day.
Real couple Bethany & Sam chose a wedding highlights film alongside their wedding photography package. The couple got hitched at Plas Dinam Country House and had super fun and colourful multi-cultural wedding day.
